Job Question (Vanity)

I was let go from what was to be a permanent job, last week. It took me a year to get it too, now I'm empty-handed. I have a hot tip for a local company that's hiring, but it's a union shop. The state I reside in is not a right-to-work state. What do I need to know about getting into a 'closed shop', and do I even want to?

Union Money Helps 'Dues Skim' Stay Alive

A law has been passed to stop the Service Employees International Union from taking money from home health care workers, and the dummy employer that was created to facilitate that action has been defunded. Yet money is still being taken and the dummy employer is still in operation thanks to a donation of at least $12,000 from the SEIU to keep the scheme alive. He voted against preventing union stewards from being paid to do union business on school...

What's more, the judge did not rule on dues deductions for unions that he earlier found the state improperly decertified. The state's largest unions were decertified, and the ruling -- at least for now -- will make it harder for them to get money from dues. But U.S. District Court Judge William Conley gave unions one beneficial ruling by saying that...

- State unions were dealt a setback Friday when a federal judge said they would have to get their members to opt in, rather than opt out, to have the state deduct union dues from their paychecks. What's more, the judge did not rule on dues deductions for unions that he earlier found the state improperly decertified. A substantial number of state unions were decertified, and the ruling - at least for now - will make it harder for them to get money. But U.S. District Court Judge William Conley gave unions one beneficial ruling by saying that members who...
